With all of the snow we got last year, Callan and I made a whale out of snow. He still remembers that quite clearly and yesterday he asked me to make him another one along with a rhino, a hippo, and an alligator.
Well today Renee took Kinsley and ran some errands while Callan and I went out to construct a snow rhino.
We started to construct the four legs and the back. I didn't know how to put the head so that it wouldn't fall off. I decided to have the rhino in a head down grazing position. Two of the neighbor boys decided to help out too. While I was piling on the snow, Callan was using his mini shovel to scoop snow. Most of the time he decided to sit under the rhino's legs. It was like a little fort.
I finally started sculpting the rhino and it was looking decent until I was shaping the rhino's snout. The whole thing collapsed, and I just saw two little legs sticking out. Luckily Callan was only scared and not really hurt. I admit I did panic a little and almost had a hernia lifting a giant rhino shaped chunk of snow off of my son.
I thought our little outing was over, but Callan said he wanted to stay outside. Seeing a need for more safety in my snow structures, I filled in the rhino's legs and made a hippo. We decided to make a hippo laying down with a slide and some stairs built into the back. It didn't look bad and Callan really enjoyed it. It ended up being 5 feet high and 11 feet long. Between the rhino/hippo and shoveling yesterday my back is gonna need a break.
Sadly some of the neighbor boys were playing on it and then knocked down part of it on purpose. I got to play the wonderful role of "hey you kids get off that hippo" guy. Oh well, at least we made a memory.
I will post pictures of it soon.
