This past weekend the Huston Gardening Season began! We planted some of our seeds indoors. What we learned: Callan is super anal about dumping dirt into the individual planters...no dirt fell out of place! Kinsley....well, organization and neatness are not her strengths. Every day we're seeing more and more ways how these two siblings are very, very different!
By the way, I just finished reading All New Square Foot Gardening* book by Mel Bartholomew. I finished it in just two days! Love this book! Love it, love it, love it! Last year Gene did 95% of the gardening because I had no interest in it...or very little anyway. This year I'm super excited about our garden, mostly because of how this book paints a picture of how easy gardening can be! Here's one part of the book that pretty much explains Mr. Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening method:
"You'll experience a continuous cycle of nurturing, harvesting, and replanting each year with no soil preparation and no weeding to do ever again."
It's an easy-read, so don't let gardening scare you! All my fears about gardening were put to rest after reading this book. The kids are excited about gardening, too, which is a major plus! We all can't wait to eat our first harvest this year.
*I highly recommend buying the updated version of this book (the All New Square Foot Gardening, NOT the Square Foot Gardening). The author states in his updated version that he has learned so much after writing the first version that the first version is almost obsolete! He states, "Why write an updated version of the best selling gardening book of all time? The old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well, Square Foot Gardening isn't broken, but the all new model is so superior, so much simpler, and so improved that you can now forget all about the original book and the original Square Foot Gardening method!"
