"What if an elk sits on my head?"

We realized that we never posted anything about our two days at the Grand Canyon, so we're going to go back in time (to Tuesday night) and give you a glimpse into what I like to call the "wet burrito" part of our trip. You see, Gene and I have never been camping together so camping in the great outdoors at the Grand Canyon was a memory we won't forget. We arrived at The Grand Canyon on Tuesday night around 7pm. We quickly checked in and set up our tent at our site and drove over to the South Rim to see the sunset over the Canyon. This was both of our first times seeing the Canyon, and it was every bit as gorgeous as everyone said it would be. It even brought tears to my eyes when I thought about the beautiful landscape in front of me that God had created with His own hands. What a powerful God we serve!

Well, after the sunset we headed back to our campsite for a good night's rest. Well, maybe at least a night's rest. Or, maybe you could just call it a night "nap." We crawled into our brand new "mummy" type sleeping bags (which totally stink because you can't move your legs more than 3 inches apart). I also kept worrying that an elk would wander on over to our tent and sit on my head during the night. That statement of course sent Gene into fits of laughter, and that became the catch phrase of the day. (I'm not used to being in the woods....can you tell?!) Well, there were no elk in our tent, but it just so happened that as soon as we zipped up our little two person tent, it started thundering and lightning. Pretty soon a monsoon let loose above our tent. So, when we woke up in the morning we were like two little wet burittos all wrapped up and soaking wet. We managed to dry out all our stuff during the day, just in time to climb back in the tent for night #2...another sleepless night. Let's just say that I'm VERY grateful for a mattress tonight and not rocky ground.

During day #2 at the Grand Canyon we walked around on the South Rim trail. We saw some wildlife such as lizards, ravens, (very tame) mule deer, and (my personal favorite) got very close to a huge elk! While being at the Canyon was fun, I'm grateful for a soft bed tonight and no anxiousness about elk sitting on my head. With that said...GOOD NIGHT everyone, and enjoy the elk! (For some reason out of all our gorgeous Grand Canyon pictures, this is the only one that I can get to post for you all tonight...more later I guess.)
