My First Dog Sled

The recent snow and ice combo we had recently in maryland took me back to when I was in high school. It had snowed a good foot or so and then we had an ice storm. The weather for the next week or so was extremely cold and hardened the top layer of snow into a solid sheet of ice that could hold my weight (all 150 pounds of me). In those days I had my trusty hunting beagle Auky who was fiesty and full of life. ( I think this was before he got neutered). We discovered that he could pull ice across the ice covered field with relative ease. So we tied his leash to a saucer and away we went. He'd just run and run back and forth across the field enjoying this new found exercise.

My cousin Nicholas was about four or five so we figured we'd give him a go at it. Auky was rarin' to take off and we yelled for him to go, and away he did across the field.....but he didn't stop. I'm not sure if he was having to much fun or chasing a rabbit, but he ran and ran with my little cousin attached to the sled. After much to do, we caught up with Auky and my cousin, who never wanted to try dog sledding again. I think he may have been scarred for life. It was a fond memory and I believe Gram might even have some of these festivities on film.
