Well since the creation of this blog I have given you a glimpse into what topics excite me, and as Renee like to joke about it's always changing.
I'd like to say that my interests are always expanding.
My newest interest is North Dakota. I know what you're think. There Gene goes again liking some random "underdog" state.
Let me help you trace where this interest has come from. First when Renee and I spent a week in Denver and then went north through Wyoming to Yellowstone and east through South Dakota the area rekindled an interest I used to have on Native American culture, as we passed the Battle of Little Big Horn. I wanted to stop, but I forgot the history of the place in enough detail to interest Renee, so when we got home I researched the old west and Indian history.
We also want to visit every state and on this journey home we said, when and why would anyone EVER visit North Dakota?
Now I have a reason...my Grandpa Ernie, on my dad's side, used to live on a small farm in Williston, North Dakota. I think it's pretty vacant these days, but now there is a reason to visit this once booming state.
Here are some quick Williston, ND facts
Population - 12,512
The population doubled in the 50s and 60s when oil was struck there
Founded 1887
Temperatures can range from -50 to 109 degrees (something for everyone)
Phil Jackson - famous basketball coach of Bulls and Lakers grew up there
Lewis and Clark made a stop there too
So let's all pitch in, rent a tour bus and head to North Dakota!!!

I'd go! I skipped it on my road trip, too. :-)
I'll go, too! Just drop me off in Colorado on your way to ND...

I've got a few comments Gene:
1. South Dakota is much better than North. It's got the Black Hills, Mt Rushmore, and not least of all, Sioux Falls.
2. Al and I have driven through the southeast part of North Dakota when trying a different route from Colorado to my grandparents' house in Minnesota. We only made that mistake once.
3. I takes about 6 hours to drive straight across North Dakota on I-94; 8 if you're hauling a horse trailer. Medora, ND is a great place for a trail ride.
4. Don't ever go on a trail ride on a mule.
5. Seeing every state together is an admirable goal. Alexis and I did a count on our last road trip (summer of 2007; we logged 8,000 miles and a baby). We're somewhere around 30 states visited together; surprisingly, about 25 have been accompanied by our older dog, Lhotse.
6. I've got experience driving (and parallel parking) a 37 foot RV. We're definitely in for a road trip!
Kyle.
