watch out NHL...make room for callan huston!

It was so funny.  All month long Callan has been talking about how excited he was to be playing hockey on February 16th.  He couldn't wait.  Because it was Hockey Weekend Across America, our local ice rink was offering a free hockey lesson on the 16th.  I hadn't considered his expectations until we were on our way to the ice rink and he exclaimed excitedly from the back seat, "I can't wait to check, do a spin move, and shoot the puck into the goal!  Then we'll do a shoot-out."

I exchanged looks at Gene and said, "I think you better explain to him that this is his first time on the ice EVER and he's going to be focusing on how to stand up today...not doing spin moves."

When we got there, he was the youngest one signed up for the free lesson, but one of the instructors graciously spent the whole hour with him, teaching him how to "march" on skates and how to get up off the ice when you fall down (which was where he spent most of the hour).  He persevered through the whole hour and came out with a smile...so I think it was a success!  We told him that all the hockey players he watches on on the NHL started out just learning how to skate first before they played hockey.

Of course it didn't help that all the other kids on Saturday were at the other end of the ice rink practicing shooting the puck into the net while Callan was at the other end of the rink learning how to stand.  Poor guy. Nothing like having what you want just within your reach, only you can't stand up to go get it!

Here are a few videos for the grandparents to see their budding hockey player.  :)

Of course it would be MY son who wants to spend his "athletic career" in an ice cold hockey rink!  If this current obsession carries on, I'll have to invest in some serious long johns.
