Sunday evening and most of the day today we found ourselves in Colorado Springs, CO. It was BEAUTIFUL! We could look out our window at the Travelodge and see the Rockies. Talk about an amazing view! Last night we toured The Garden of the Gods, a gorgeous place filled with amazing red rock formations. We headed to bed pretty early last night, because even though it was only 7:30pm CO time, it was really 9:30pm MD time. I'm happy to report that Gene finally got more than 1 hour of sleep. Today, after a whole 12 hours of sleep, we headed off to Pike's Peak in Colorado Springs. We drove the 19 miles to the summit and took some pictures and video taped. We also spotted some wild creatures such as the pika, big horned sheep, and (Phil's cousin) the yellow-bellied marmot. Gene even got a marmot to come up and sniff Phil by coaxing him in with a Cheez-It cracker (totally illegal by the way, we later found out). It started to rain just as we were decending from the top so we didn't get a chance to walk off the beaten path to look for Big Foot (as Gene so desired to do...see picture). We decided to start heading towards northwest Colorado hopefully landing in Dinosaur, CO sometime this evening or early tomorrow. Right now we took a pit stop in Denver to write this blog and grab a bite to eat....and to say that we've been to Denver! We are one block from their state capitol building. We got some great pictures of that, too.
Signing off from Panera in Denver. (Thank goodness for wireless internet connection at Panera!)
P.S. I forgot to mention that Gene was obsessed with us buying cowboy hats as soon as we got there (ok...I'll admit it....I did have a craving to buy one, too). So, you may see some western flare in some of our pics.
