Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a very unique place full of natural beauty mixed with the look and feel of various places; Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Ocean City all rolled into one. Apparently Niagara Falls (at least the Canadian side where we were) is a private park community which regulates itself.

Niagara Falls is full of history. 15 people have attempted going over the falls in various "barrels" and 10 have lived to tell about it.

The first person to ever attempt this feat was a 62 year old school teacher in the barrel Renee is standing next to in the picture. The first attempt left her stuck at the top of the falls, but the second attempt she took her cat with her and both survived.

We went on a boat called the Maid of the Mist which drives you up to the base of the falls. The "mist" hits you sideways in the face like a hard rain, hence the blue ponchos.

The American falls is less spectacular because of the rock pile at its base. But geologists and engineers said that if they moved the rocks the whole thing would crumble down.

This barge was intentionally sunk by its crew before it could go over the falls

Niagara Falls moves back one inch per year due to erosion. Without the dams up river it would erode 3 feet per year, which it has for the 8,000 years.
The falls are illuminated at night in various colors so that you can watch it 24/7.
