So here is the bulletin board which goes along with Del and my reading contest. Nothing says we're serious about reading than giant heads on little construction paper bodies. 
So when Del's class is in the lead, he has a sad face and I have a happy face. When my class takes the lead (as they are right now) then I have a disgruntled face and Del can smile. We have a running tally also in our classrooms to keep the kids motivated.
