V is for Volcano

Renee and I have been talking about how to go about "teaching" Callan. We have decided to try to break it up and teach around Callan's interests. He has recently picked up information on volcanoes while watching Dinosaur Train on PBS. So we decided to start there.

Renee got several books on volcanoes and we read through them together.

Then I drew a picture of a volcano with a happy face and told him to draw the lava. We did that a few times and then we practiced drawing a V, down up, down-up and Callan got a few that were V-ish. He also liked repeating the spelling of volcano.

I did know how to get him to transition to the final part of our volcano lesson, so I drew the volcano in a bed and told him the volcano was sleeping. He bought that and we went to the kitchen for the experiment. We made a "volcano" out of a plastic cup and aluminum foil. We mixed baking soda and colored vinegar and he loved the eruption. He kept wanting to see it happen.

He really is a little sponge right now, so this week we've been talking about sharks since it is Shark Week. Renee even showed him a video of the whale sharks being transported from Taiwan to the Georgia Aquarium and now he asks, "whale sharks in airplane Mommy?"

Who knows what random topic and letter will be the focus of next week at the Hustons house.
