Gene and I decided that we needed to do more planned activities with Callan during the day to help keep his mind engaged and not allow him to be so tempted towards mischief. These words that I recently read by J.C. Ryle in his book The Duties of Parents explain it perfectly...
So, we decided to have a theme for each week. Callan has a lot of "passions," so we decided to feed off of things that he already loves. Last week was volcano week. We got volcano books from the library and watched clips of volcanoes erupting on You Tube. Gene drew a volcano on Callan's whiteboard and taught him how to draw a V. Gene even used vinegar and baking soda to create a "real" volcano. For a few days after that Callan kept getting into the pantry and pulling out the vinegar saying, "More volcano?" As a result, Callan knows the words lava and erupting.
This week we deemed "Shark Week" since it's Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. Callan loves watching shark videos and reading shark books. I even made brownies and Gene drew a shark on it using icing, so after dinner Callan always asks for some "shark cake." I printed off a diagram of a shark, so we've been talking about the shark's gills, dorsal fin, pectoral fin, eyes, tail, etc.
We've been trying to spell with him, too. Today when he woke up he wanted me to write some words for him to spell with me. He would say the word and I'd write it while spelling it out loud. Mommy, Daddy, Callan, Kinsley, Aunt Kel, volcano, shark, and fish were the words he wanted to work on today.
His favorite so far seems to be this video called "Whale Shark Transport" that I found on the Discovery Channel website where it shows UPS transporting a whale shark by airplane to the Georgia Aquarium. All day long I've heard nothing but, "More airplane and whale shark, Mommy?"
We've also started "Blanket Time" this week. I put down a blanket on the floor along with some toys and Callan has to play on the blanket until the timer buzzes. So far it's going pretty well. I'm trying to train him in self-control and staying in one spot longer than 2 minutes. It's been a process, but after three days I'm already seeing some fruit from my labors.
**Note: Great minds think alike I guess. :) At the same time that I was writing this post, Gene was also writing a post about our volcano and shark week.
"And man, weak, sinful man, must have something to do or else his soul will soon get into an unhealthy state. We must have our hands filled, and our minds occupied with something, or else our imaginations will soon ferment and breed mischief."
