A Gripe about Recess

How many of us remember days when we were little and played at recess? What did you like to play? I remember when we had organized kickball games and a lot of fun. I also remember playing dodgeball, mostly the guys, but some brave girls always snuck in. There was the form of dodgeball with the line in the middle, and there was the more fast paced form where there was one person in the middle of the circle. I remember enjoying it, don't you? Yes, there were people who got hurt, but no one ever got all up in arms about kids throwing balls at one another that I remember. One of my personal favorites was a game where a bunch of guys would line up along a brick wall and 4 kids would get kickballs and throw them at those on the wall. You were allowed to move along the wall as long as you kept at least one hand on the wall. Crazy fun! I'm sure that there were many minor, undiagnosed concussions, but look at all of us 20 - 30 year olds. We're all right, aren't we?

Now a days, kids aren't allowed to throw anything anywhere near another student, due to law suits, rules, and school regulations. In my personal opinion it is very sad because today's students lack the time to have fun because of all the pressures on them to learn everything that our parents learned their senior year of high school. (No offense to any parents out there. That's just what my elders have always said to me during my schooling.)

So faithful blog viewers, what are your opinions of dodgeball in school? And what were some of your favorite recess games? Let us know.

Oooh, first comment honor goes to me!

#1 Throughout middle school, I was one of the few girls who played soccer. I got hit in the face or head with the ball numerous times. I turned out mostly alright.

#2 It's no surprise that kickball has been outlawed in our sue-happy nation. However, it is sad. It was -- and is -- a great game.

I was one of those unfortunate children whose face turned bright red after beeing wailed in the face with a plastic coated dodge ball, but I too turned out okay:)
I would have to say though, that my all time favorite was kickball in Ms. Rita's 4th grade class. Oh, and square dancing in Mr. Camron's gym class, he broke out the record player for that one!
